Worcester Bosch Greenstar Junior — Repair and Servicing in London

The Worcester Bosch Greenstar Junior was one of the most popular boilers sold in the UK between approximately 2000 and 2013. Lightweight, compact and affordable, the Junior 24i and 28i were fitted in enormous numbers across London’s private rental sector, housing associations and owner occupied flats. These boilers are now between twelve and twenty five years old. Some are still running reliably. Many are starting to have component failures that require a honest conversation about whether repair or replacement is the right answer.

Greenstar Junior Models

The most common Junior models we see in London are the Junior 24i at 24kW, the Junior 28i at 28kW, and the Junior 32i at 32kW. The i models have electronic ignition. Earlier Junior models used a standing pilot light. All of these we attend regularly across London.

Common Greenstar Junior Faults

Diverter Valve O Ring Failure

The diverter valve on the Greenstar Junior is its most common failure point at this age. The internal O rings degrade and the valve can no longer fully divert flow between heating and hot water. You get one or the other working but not both correctly. This is the most frequent repair we carry out on the Junior range. Diverter valve replacement extends the boiler’s life by a further three to five years in many cases.

Secondary Heat Exchanger Scaling

London’s hard water is particularly damaging to the secondary plate heat exchanger on the Junior, which heats domestic hot water. After years without scale treatment, the plates clog with limescale and hot water flow rate drops significantly. A Junior that used to give a good shower is now trickling. Descaling or replacing the secondary heat exchanger can restore performance, but on a boiler of significant age, the cost of this repair needs weighing against a replacement.

PCB and Fan Failures

At twelve or more years old, PCB and fan failures on the Greenstar Junior are becoming more common. Both are repairable but the cost, set against the age of the boiler and its likely remaining useful life, means replacement is often the more financially sensible choice. We will tell you clearly what the repair will cost and what a new boiler would cost, and leave the decision with you.

Repair or Replace — Our View on the Greenstar Junior

A Greenstar Junior under twelve years old with a straightforward diverter valve or electrode fault is worth repairing. One that is fifteen or more years old and facing a PCB, heat exchanger or fan failure is probably at the point where a new Greenstar Life or 8000 Style makes more financial sense. The energy savings from a modern boiler versus a fifteen year old Junior are significant enough to contribute meaningfully to the payback period. We will give you the numbers and let you decide.
